When it comes to funk, there's always a demand on the dance floor, and so Squeezable Hugo's debut, "A Long Tale About a Little Funk," should find its place, as the band continues to build its reputation for fun live shows.
This band's particular brand of funk is rooted in the skills of main man Hugo. "Smooth funk" I call it, and radio-ready lead track "Bad at Bein Good" tells the story, with a happy ending. Here, Hugo's vocals ride a funky groove that hooks with the chorus: "Oh I'm bad at bein good, good at bein bad at bein good."
The rest of the songs showcase the band's diversity, and that's where the strengths/weaknesses become clear. Other songs that key on Hugo's charismatic vocals, from the contemporary pop of "Flesh and Bone" to the R&B ballad "Butterfly Wings," stand out. Cuts that rely on below-the-belt rhythms, like "Average Funk Band," leave you with the feeling that Squeezable Hugo's running after the funk but keeps slipping on the polish.
