As contemporary hip-hop recedes further into the depths of commercialized concepts and regurgitated formats, there are still a few artists who continue to push the creative envelope. One such artist is Del the Fun-kee Homosapien, who after a seven-year hiatus makes a bold return with the cerebellum-swelling opus "Both Sides of the Brain."

Now that Del has his own label, Hieroglyphics Imperium, he has gone back to his roots, liberally exhibiting the lighthearted sense of humor that propelled his quirky 1991 debut, "I Wish My Brother George Was Here," to classic status. There are still dark elements to "Both Sides," but Del's temperamental metamorphosis is evident throughout. Along with his sense of humor, Del's knack for musical groundbreaking has returned as well.

Del the Funkee Homosapien continues to make his music on his terms.
