Quintessence Volume 2
Label: Concord
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Quintessence Volume 2

"Cool School" jazz graduates Stan Getz and Chet Baker -- both known for their warm, instantly recognizable tones -- are captured here on their last known recording together in Norway 1983. It's a rare glimpse of the two jazz icons (who disliked each other personally), seamlessly weaving their lyrical horn styles together for a night of creative eloquence.

"Quintessence Volume 2" is a mix of uptempo staples ("Conception," "I'll Remember April" ) and slower ballads. Getz's beautiful restraint really shows on "Blood Count" as his sensuous tenor sax lines flutter like satin drapes in a breeze. On "You or No One" Baker supports Getz's opening riffs and then breaks off for a breathtaking, perfectly paced trumpet solo.

Thick with dead-on improvisation and musical instinct, this is a rare jazz album on which the musical importance matches the historical importance.
