Review - File Under Futurism

Artist: DJ Spooky vs. The Freight Elevator Quartet

DJ Spooky (Paul Miller) is the thinking man's beat-scaper. He posits his chin-stroking take on post-hip-hop genre-scrambling as DJ culture's answer to a comp-lit course. Trouble is, his music's never gotten the funk down convincingly. On "File Under Futurism Spooky," in free-jazz mode, grabs his stand-up bass and heads into noble savagery with ace jigsaw jazzers the Freight Elevator Quartet.

On "The Revolution Will Be Streamed" he builds a ruddy riddim architecture out of breakbeats and a violin's mournful wail. Miller and the FEQ toss the script out the window, which makes for some of this recording's better moments. Here's to more "future" and less "ism" from Spooky.
