Review - Change in My Pocket

Artist: Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets Featuring Sam Myers

Since 1986, guitarist Anson Funderburgh and singer/harmonica player Sam Myers have been mixing up a red-hot blend of Texas-jump and Chicago-style blues that's been drawing rave reviews. The authentic gruff baritone of the towering (and semiblind) Myers, combined with Funderburgh's nimble blues guitar-phrasings, have revived the careers of both men and produced some of the best blues albums in the '90s.

Unfortunately, "Change in My Pocket" sees the boys going through the motions. Myers' vocals on the opening title track are wooden, and the band never really finds its stride with the mostly forgettable batch of originals. Oddly, the players seem to be more comfortable on the nice choice of covers, nailing Buddy Guy's "$100 Bill" and Willie Dixon's "Young Fashioned Ways." It's on these tracks that you get a glimpse of the energy that's been better captured on some of the duo's previous efforts.
