Review - Lustra

Artist: Echobelly

Label: Sony
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Lustra

Echobelly's first CD kicks off with "Bulldog Baby," a screaming orgy of strings and surf guitar. The wispy female vocals on "I'm Not a Saint" have a splash of Cranberries in them, while spiky guitar and industrial bass push the electronic cafe beat of "Here Comes the Big Rush."

A good portion of this disc is dedicated to aggro power pop of the Bangles variety. Songs like "Iris Art," "The World is Flat" and "Everyone Knows Better" could easily be odes to the late '80s as guitars churn, basslines loop and keyboards pad in the distance. Standouts include the parched-throat poetry of "Bleed" and the mellow smokiness of "Falling Flame," which features lyrics like, iconoclast, a hidden past/you left before you came.

At its most inventive, "Lustra" is a dazzling party. Even at its weakest it still rocks.
