Review - Alternative Stereo Sounds

Artist: Adventures in Stereo

Ask Lenny Kravitz if he's just raping the past and he'll deny it like a kid with his hand in the retro-cookie jar. Scotland's Adventures in Stereo are up-front about it. Former Primal Scream/Spirea X member Jim Beattie and Judith Boyle's stated goals are to create music that is exactly like the hazy memories of rock's teenybopper years, only better.

I'm always leery of bands that depend on others for their identity, but some bands -- like the Primitives or the Darling Buds -- can pull it off. These guys don't. Rather than being a fun romp through the past or an interesting twist on what's gone on before them, AIS just dog-paddle in the quicksand of forgettable bubblegum. The result is just as sticky sweet and just as instantly forgettable.

Still, if you're sick of Time-Life compilation CDs at your pool party but want something equally nostalgic, throw this on.
