Review - Astrud

Artist: Astrud

Posted on Wed, Jul 8, 1998 at 4:00 AM

Label: Sealed Fate
Media: CD
Format: Album
WorkNameSort: Astrud

The language barrier on Astrud's trippy, clever, electronic folk en Español is less of an obstacle than singer Manolo Martinez' thin voice. There are nods to early Kraftwerk and the Pet Shop Boys from this two-man combo, and some of the analog-synth work harkens back to the '80s.

Amidst the beeps and boops (and the incredibly short running time), there is much that is enjoyable here -- at no time, however, does the music threaten to actually grab you. Only the retro-lovely "Last Time" or the English-language "Lemongirl" merit repeated listening.

If these guys aren't drop-dead cute, I'd say they're destined for the Holiday Inn Madrid lounge.
