Review - The Surveillance

Artist: Trans Am

Posted on Thu, Apr 9, 1998 at 4:00 AM

On their third full-length release, Trans Am have streamlined their progressive/space/ electronic attack, creating a stirring but claustrophobic and paranoid recording that manages to inject humor and old-fashioned rock into the band's instrumental brew.

"The Surveillance" broods and bellows, morphing into the sonic equivalent of a cat-and-mouse game. Reared on Rush, caffeine and Mike Post television themes, this D.C. power trio churns out stop/start riffs with finesse -- just long enough to excite and then shift into repetitive and occasionally overdriven synth drones and pops.

Trans Am produced "The Surveillance" themselves, thoroughly integrating the various facets of their studied genre-bending. All instrumental and all focused, this album is fit for all ears.
