Readers talk about whether fast-food workers should be paid $15 an hour

Wage wars

This is stupid. It’s a starter job, not meant to live off of (“Orlando fast-food workers plan first strike ever,” blogs.orlandoweekly.com, May 14). I don’t make $15 an hour, why the hell should we pay a burger flipper $15? I understand the economy sucks, and the work sucks. It’s hard to find a job. Maybe $10 an hour is what you should try looking for, but $15 is insane. Also, in this job economy, everyone will be replaced quite quickly for people who need a job.

Let’s give this some real thought. Regardless of job availability, the value of a job is determined by the level of education, responsibility, training and skill needed to do the job. This is why a doctor makes more than a physicians assistant, a physicians assistant makes more than a registered nurse, and an RN makes more than an LPN/tech. I am an educated pharmacy technician working for a major pharmacy. I am highly involved in patient care management, and I make just under $14 an hour. Everyone in this country is given an opportunity to obtain a highly valued job, with a higher wage. If you don’t believe that to be true, then your objective should be to create more opportunity for underprivileged individuals, not to raise the wage of a low-value job. Wage and the cost of living are interrelated. If we raise wages arbitrarily, companies will have to raise prices, reduce the quality of goods or lay people off to meet profit margins, thus devaluing the dollar further. I am not trying to bash people who work for fast-food companies. I just believe we, as a society, need to be more realistic in our expectation of what a job should earn based on its value, because everybody works hard for their money. Unfortunately many people don’t think of the more widespread consequences of just raising minimum wage.
