Scene stealers

Selected highlights of the 1999 Florida Film Festival social calendar:

Student Filmmaker After-Screening Bash, 4 pm Sunday, June 13; Harold & Maude's Espresso Bar. After their pet projects are unveiled at Enzian, corner tomorrow's bright young auteurs for an informal chat. Pepper them with the favorite queries "Where did you get financing?" and "What kind of film stock did you use?" while they're still green enough to answer happily and willingly.

The Twilight Zone, 5 pm-7 pm nightly Wednesday, June 16 through Saturday, June 19; Langford Resort Hotel, 300 E, New England Ave., Winter Park; free; 644-3400. The unofficial hangout of the festival crowd goes official this year with a daily happy hour that brings the movie set into direct contact with old-school lounge lizardry. Those experimental shorts always make more sense after a few martinis, anyway.

Creating The Blair Witch Project: A Case Study, 10:30 am Friday, June 18; Enzian Theater. The five member, UCF-bred creative team behind the breakout hit retrace the steps to its success, with Haxan Films' lawyer and publicist on hand to field those embarrassing "I was the sixth Haxan" claims.

An Evening with Christopher Walken, 6:45 pm Friday, June 18; Enzian. Q&As with Illeana Douglas, Paul Winfield and Gena Rowlands are also on this year's agenda, but it's the tete-a-tete with Hollywood's most fascinating iceman that's the must-see. Frankly, we're scared of what he might do to us if we didn't show.

Coffee with Bill: A Plympton Caffeine Buzz, 2:30 pm Saturday, June 19; Harold & Maude's. The returning king of shock animation screens a video of his work, signs copies of his books and discusses his attention-grabbing career, all while loading up on Taster's Choice.

Swingin' Swamp Soiree, 7 pm Saturday June 19; Sound-stage 33, Universal Studios. The fancy-dress awards gala adopts a wildlife motif for its 1999 edition, with gators, panthers and exotic birds prowling the premises throughout the program of dinner and tributes. Just don't order the manatee.
