Rene Nguyen is the head bartender at Hanson’s Shoe Repair. Tucked above NV Art Bar, you’ll find that he and the folks at Hanson’s are passionate about stirred and spirit-forward cocktails that harken back to the pre-Prohibition era. Self-taught in craft bartending, Rene eventually decided to leave his office job behind to pursue his passion for a proper drink. “I prefer a spirited cocktail. I like to taste what I’m drinking.”
ORIGINAL RECIPE
The English Channel
1.5 ounces Plymouth Gin
1.5 ounces Carpano Bianco Vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters
Cynar rinse
Chill serving glass with ice. Combine gin, vermouth and bitters with ice and stir for 30 seconds.
Discard ice from chilled coupe glass and rinse with three dashes of Cynar.
Strain cocktail into Cynar-rinsed glass.
Take an orange peel and express oils over the surface of the cocktail, rim the glass using the peel and garnish.
Serve up.
