More bad news for the Sanford Housing Authority and its outgoing executive director, Timothy Hudson: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has just released a report that found the troubled agency has violated eight provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Among the findings: most of the Housing Authority's grounds, including its Dumpsters, the Administration Building and community rooms, are inaccessible to disabled tenants. The Authority doesn't provide accommodations for the disabled when asked. And the agency hasn't designated an employee to notify tenants if they are eligible for programs involving the disabled.
Worst of all is that the Housing Authority, in typical arrogant fashion, included a statement in its admission policy that said the agency would determine whether a tenant could have a live-in aide.
Given the mess that the agency is in, the complaints might seem minor. But they emphasize a problem that disabled tenants complained about in Orlando Weekly's January story, A Wayward Shepherd, a title that pointed the finger at Hudson for the Authority's accumulating mess.
Hudson resigns this week. But there's little hope for immediate relief for the long-suffering tenants of Sanford's projects.
