As someone who’s something of an amateur aviation historian and is the son of a man who in August 1945 had been in the Navy for about six years and was stationed in San Diego preparing for the invasion of Japan, I have to say I disagree with your recent obituary and portrayal of the life and career of Gen. Paul Tibbetts `“People who died,” Jan. 3`. To put it kindly, your position and my position on his legacy are forever on opposite sides; nothing you can say will sway me to the correctness of your position any more than anything I could conceivably say would convince you that my take is correct.
Nevertheless, I am compelled to offer an opposing recollection about something you reported.
You mentioned that when the National Air and Space Museum was going to put the Enola Gay’s restored forward fuselage on display for a while about 15 years ago, the curatorial staff had written a rough draft of the script for the display that would put its mission into a balanced historical context for the first time, and that when the draft was presented to a panel of aviation historians and experts for their opinions and suggestions for possible changes, the war-mongering bastards there and elsewhere tore it apart and caused major and erroneous changes to be made to the finalized script, thereby denying the United States a chance to start on the road to repentance for what we did to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
What I remember from what I read of the matter was that the general impression that most of the panel got was that the script had been written by a company that creates and publishes history text books for Japanese schools. In other words, instead of presenting a truly balanced account that would have explained the Pacific war as a clash between an old Pacific power (Japan) and an emerging new power (the United States), the curators of the museum presented the war as a war of unwarranted aggression by a trio of barbarous, uncultured, racist powers against the most cultured, refined and peaceful people the world had ever known, and when these morally and ethically superior people were forced to put down the scroll and pick up the sword, it was only to protect the heaven on earth that is Japan from the onslaught of the barbarian hordes and their allies. And that’s why there was so much controversy about the script.

This sounds like a typical union person `“Of mouse and man,” Dec. 27`. In this case he wants to raise the cost of doing business for his employer. How is that going to help the union’s cause? What it will do is make it harder for the union to win concessions for salaries or benefits since Disney will be making less profit.
The local municipalities and the state government don’t have a problem with the arrangement because if Reedy Creek hadn’t been formed, Disney wouldn’t have been built and the billions of dollars of other development that has come to Orlando would have gone elsewhere. Reedy Creek is good for Disney, but it’s also good for Orlando, Florida and the unions who have employees working there.
