Mad Cow and Theatre Downtown launch new seasons, 2014 Fringe artist applications already available, and a list of plays opening soon around town

Culture to Go: local arts shorts

Two relatively recent Broadway dramas are on their way to Orlando. Mad Cow Theatre has announced a cast for Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities, which kicks off their 17th season this month; Marty Stonerock, Marion Marsh, Ginger Lee McDermott, Joe Candelora and Matt Rush appear under the direction of Aradhana Tiwari. And Theatre Downtown has added Bruce Norris’ 2012 Tony-winner, Clybourne Park, to their 2013-14 season in January.

It seems like 2013’s Fringe Festival only ended yesterday, but it’s already time to plan for next year. Artist applications are available (through Nov. 15) at orlandofringe.org, with a nifty online format and new venue options for shows longer than 60 minutes. And the monthly Fringe Year-Round performance series kicked off last Monday with a best-of recital from Yow Dance at the Shakes. Upcoming acts include the return of Fringe favorites Kevin J. Thornton at the Venue Oct. 4-5 and God Is a Scottish Drag Queen at Parliament House Nov. 8-10.

Two local museums turn to the cinema for inspiration this week. Orlando Museum of Art screens a slate of artists’ shorts from Films4Peace today (Wednesday, Sept. 11), followed at 6:30 p.m. by a free presentation of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, a documentary on the dissident Chinese artist. And downtown’s History Center celebrates Star Wars this weekend with Galactic Encounter Days, featuring the 501st Stormtrooper Legion Saturday and a droid parade Sunday.
