Luke Temple’s past work – both solo and with full band Here We Go Magic – has bounced haphazardly from kaleidoscopic psych-pop to precious chamber-folk to propulsive indie rock. But Good Mood Fool allows Temple to embrace his love of the ’80s with splashy synth snaps, humid chillwave beats and endearing blue-eyed soul as his dominant approach. Temple’s falsetto soars on “Florida,” a tearjerker about a friend losing her dad before succumbing to drug addiction. But sassy lyrical moments still abound on the MTV-checking “Those Kids” and the languidly tongue-in-cheek “Hardest Working Self Made Mexican.” Still dig Temple’s experimental side? The breakneck beats of “Jessica Brown Findlay” and downtempo shuffle of “Terrified Witness” should abide. On first listen, Good Mood Fool scans like a shallow summer soundtrack – yet its nostalgic vibes transcend all seasons, especially here in the Sunshine State.
