The single thing that most defines the latest record from Bear In Heaven is its unfaltering sense of purpose. The centering quality of its well-defined sonic architecture allows the band's cloud-riding neo-prog compositions to travel confidently with focus and efficiency.

This Brooklyn-by-way-of-the-South band openly romances psychedelic washes, dream-pop drifts and the sweeps and swerves of shoegaze on their sophomore album. But instead of giving in to the fashionable, but often misguided, tendency to submerge their sound under a sea of echoing textures du jour, Bear In Heaven employs Krautrock's spinal integrity as effective ballast. While the songs are voyages into the celestial heights, their well-grounded structures ensure power, concision and listenability.

Also contributing to the sonic saliency of Beast Rest Forth Mouth is Bear In Heaven's thoughtful detailing and arrangement. Diaphanous layers let their sound float, walls of heavy synthesizers give it epic heft and the persistent rhythmic inevitability gives it direction and movement.

From a meditative march, "Beast in Peace" patiently unfolds until it becomes a soaring, heavenly incantation. The extraordinarily atmospheric, synth-driven rock of "You Do You" rolls out in silvery lines and somnolent grandeur. The hypnotic "Drug a Wheel" ventures into Liars territory in a primordial trudge. The brooding post-rock of "Deafening Love" rides atop a children's chorus and massive tectonics that turn sinister. With dynamic shifts and tasteful groans aimed at the stars, choice cut "Ultimate Satisfaction" is the soundtrack for interplanetary travel.

The trick of this album is its ability to impose refinement and balance on genres that can often spiral into indulgence or, worse, formlessness. Bear In Heaven's good instincts and sense of navigation make for a remarkably realized sound. Beast Rest Forth Mouth is the product of a clear vision and a steadfast compass.
