Extravagance hidden from view

The deli at the back of Park Avenue Wine & Cheese Cellar is one of the best-kept secrets in Winter Park. It's the source of extravagant takeout fare, the likes of which normally must be mail-ordered from sources like Dean and Deluca in SoHo.

Sure, you can have a corned-beef melt or a veggie hero. But some of the other items are pure fantasy: Chocolate-strawberry "trees" are shaped like topiaries and loaded with berries ($49.95-$79.95). The "smoked ducktrap salmon platter" features a pound of meat for what seems like a lot -- $65.95 -- but it's worth it for the farm-raised Eastern Atlantic salmon, which takes on woodsy aromas during a cold-smoking process over Maine fruitwoods. And Brie lovers go ga-ga over the triple-cream version. It's trimmed with walnuts, kiwis and strawberries -- and costs $199.95 for a 13-inch wheel.
