We weren’t surprised, exactly, when East End Market’s grand opening day (Friday, Oct. 25) turned into a ribbon-cutting followed by a few hours of service, followed by closure at the order of the fire safety inspector. Lots of new ventures encounter roadblocks while navigating permitting process, and apparently the new Audubon Park hub of local food and drink took that same bumpy ride. But the crowds were there in force when they reopened for the weekend. “We would guess about 3,500 people visited the market over the 19 hours we were open,” says Heather Grove, EEM community manager.
Claiming the need to “restock, retool some equipment and re-calibrate a few things,” the market was closed again through the week, reopening Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 2-3. Going forward, founder-owner John Rife and market director Gabby Lothrop say, the planned market schedule is 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday, though some vendors may eventually choose to open earlier or close later. We’re pulling for local brewmasters Lineage Coffee Roasting to be one of those early openers, or we may have to adjust our work hours.
