DUKAKIS IN THE HOUSE

Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis is attending Orlando Shakes' Playfest to present two readings (Jan. 30 and 31) of Another Side of the Island, her new female-led adaptation of Shakespeare's Tempest. She gave us a few minutes on the phone to share her thoughts on …

the appeal of The Tempest.

"The idea of forgiveness … of letting go of the slings and arrows you feel life has thrown at you … the earning of that. … That story is a real challenge for us, especially as we get older and have accumulated a lot of slings and arrows."

living 15 years in suburban Montclair, N.J., running the Whole Theatre Company.

"I like big old houses. Someone said, ‘You can get a big old house in Montclair,' and indeed there were. Can you believe it? In '71 we spent $78,000. You can't even get an apartment in New York for that, much less a house!"

her acclaimed role as Anna Madrigal, a transsexual landlady in Tales of the City.

"She was a full-bodied human being, not a freak. Just somebody trying to figure out how they were going to live and be in the world. The gay community was so appreciative of that approach."

the secret behind 46 years of marriage to actor Louis Zorich.

"Caring about each other's dreams, and being committed to making them happen."

Montana Amazon, the upcoming film in which Dukakis stars with Haley Joel Osment.

"It's an outrageous film, I just hope it gets the distribution it deserves. It's about this woman trying to get her grandkids to Canada because `spoilers involving murder and incest`. … It's wildly funny and wildly horrible."

her cousin Michael's much-mocked "tank/helmet" photo op, credited with killing his 1988 presidential bid.

"If `he` had fought back instantly, we wouldn't have had the father and then the son. Have you heard Bush the father talk about what he wants for his other son? Jeb? Enough of the Bush dynasty and its relationship with the oil people in Saudi Arabia! We haven't had enough of it?"
