Politics as usual

If Bin Laden wanted to destroy America, he has no better stooge than Karl Rove to do his handiwork for him. Look at all the fear-mongering and name calling that our leadership has descended into – and we, the people, are mimicking this playground-bully behavior (“Creatures from the Tea Party Lagoon,” Oct. 28). For those who want to gloss over the PC vs. Mac nature of the Dems and Republicans, you miss the point that we are on a dangerous pathway toward wickedness and unwisdom, the likes of which has not been seen since Germany in the 1930s.

Barking mad

Unbelievable that the Winter Park City Commission would even consider this bone-headed move when so many of their citizens these days are working less, taking pay cuts or unable to find work at all in this down economy (“The price of popularity,” Oct. 28). And they voted themselves a raise while foisting ridiculous fees on the backs of citizens who have worked very hard to take what was once an overgrown hellhole and turn it into a lovely place for many to enjoy. We have one dog park. If you don’t care for dogs, you have the entire rest of the world. Take it and leave the dogs and dog
owners in peace.

Friends of Fleet Peeples Park definitely deserves all of the credit for turning that park into a lovely, friendly, fun, community-oriented place that is enjoyed by so many people all over Orlando, not just Winter Park. I challenge anyone to show me another public park that regularly has 150-plus visitors on any given Saturday. Seriously, how many family reunions would otherwise be taking place there each weekend, shelling out a measly $50 rental for a few lousy pavilions? One? Maybe two? The logic they are using to justify their reasons is so ridiculous that it would be less insulting if they just came out and said what’s really driving these decisions. At least money, politics, doggy-hating or plain old sour grapes are things I can make sense of, even if they are wrong.

We adopted our dog back in May and have been regulars at the park since July, and it is so dear to us that we will gladly pay a fee to keep it available to our pup. My only regret is that it’s now going to the city of Winter Park, not the loyal and wonderful people at Friends of Fleet Peeples Park. As angry as I am with everything that has been decided by the commission this month, I’m also extremely regretful that we – my husband and I – didn’t make a financial contribution to the park’s efforts sooner … always planning to but forgetting, putting it off, or thinking “next month” we’ll have more money to give. Now we will be paying, but it will be a fee not a donation, and it will go to the city, not the park. If everyone that pays this winter had made the same contribution toward Friends of Fleet Peeples, we very well could have raised enough money and momentum to avoid this scrutiny and discrimination altogether.

We’ve decided to match our payment to the city with an equal donation to Friends of Fleet Peeples and encourage others like us to consider doing the same. Shame on the board members and commissioners for this injustice, but also shame on us for not protecting something that is so dear to us and for not doing a better job of supporting the efforts of the people who work so hard to maintain it. Hard lesson learned on taking treasured things for granted.
