Hannibal Square is not Constantinople, but the neighborhood's Park Café & Bakery might very well be the first establishment in town to serve traditional Turkish breakfast plates, and they're an absolute delight. Mehmet Gurkaynak, one of the two Mehmets that ran Maitland's Shish.Co Mezze & Grill, left the Turkish kebaberia to open this inviting outdoor café, and sunrise staples form a majority of the offerings.
His Breakfast Plate No. 2 is typical of an Anatolian rise-and-shine repast: black and green olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, feta, jams, honey, Nutella, butter and dried apricots dutifully arranged on a humble platter; a basket of fresh-baked Turkish bagels (called simit); an omelet served with soujouk (sausage); and, contrary to popular opinion, Turkish tea (not coffee). It all makes for a feel-good al fresco nosh that won't leave you bloated. The Turkish word for breakfast, by the way, is "kahvalt," which translates to "before coffee" — so, naturally, your breakfast should end with a piping-hot demitasse of the thick brew.
