Air attack

Conservative religious groups who think they can win over gays and lesbians to their hetero lifestyle had their unfiltered message shut out by Central Florida's dominant broadcast outlets during last week's Gay Days events. But they did succeed in buying commercial time on news-talk radio WDBO-580 AM, as well as PAX-TV, the family-oriented channel launched by outspoken Christian Lowell "Bud" Paxson, and two independent religious channels.

Lest their message be lost, the anti-gay lobby also took to the air by plane. "Freedom from homosexuality: Jesus Christ," read the banner that circled overhead as thousands of gays and nongays mingled Saturday at Disney's Magic Kingdom during the centerpiece of the ninth annual grass-roots gathering.

And of course, the action once again pushed Orlando out front in the comic monologues on late-night TV. Jay Leno picked up on the TV spots urging gay men to go straight. "Don't we have that one?" he asked. "It's called Baywatch."
