Various Artists: Love, Peace & Poetry: Turkish Psychedelic Music

Desc:CD Review: Artist: Various Artists
Label:QDK
Genre:Ethnic/World

If you've heard of Turkey's psychedelic rock scene, you might think that Erkin Koray was its alpha and omega. Nope; as this collection bears out, Koray – though a mighty and towering presence – was only one of many stunningly freakish figures involved in the Turkish rock underground of the late '60s and early '70s. Actually, to call it an "underground" is to do it a disservice; psych rock had a surprisingly huge impact in Turkey; that's borne out by this 16-track compilation. And though groups like Üç Hürel and Mogollar may slightly resemble one another, these groups sound utterly unlike anything you might run across on a Nuggets compilation. Thick threads of folk music, mystical poetry and jazz defined the Turkish scene; this compilation provides a great look beyond just Koray's achievements.
