2 Days In Paris

Rated:R
Studio:Samuel Goldwyn Films
Director:Julie Delpy
Cast:Julie Delpy, Adam Goldberg
Genre:Film
Our Rating:

Adam Goldberg might be the most annoying actor on the planet, but thankfully his co-star in 2 Days in Paris is Julie Delpy, one of the smartest and loveliest actresses on the planet. Watching the two of them onscreen together is like eating fine French cuisine and gas station–purchased beef jerky at the same time. Fortunately, it’s Delpy’s presence that dominates. She wrote, directed, edited and even scored the film, resulting in a labor of love that feels like a 96-minute therapy session. An established couple, the clingy American Jack (Goldberg) and his French girlfriend, Marion (Delpy), decide to stop off at her parents’ place in Paris for a couple of days. The relationship starts to unravel when Jack and Marion begin to bump into a surprising number of Marion’s ex-boyfriends – on street corners, at parties, at restaurants. Amid the attempts to delve into the past, Jack begins to doubt that he knows Marion at all. 2 Days in Paris is a film about frustration: linguistic, sexual, physical, emotional. It skillfully evokes the struggles of communication in a foreign city and an increasingly foreign relationship. It’s no Before Sunset, but this honest and sometimes uproarious film ultimately feels more like escargot than fried pork rinds.
