Catch and Release opens with a funeral, which is a not-so-funny way for a romantic comedy trying to pass itself off as a drama to begin. It seems Gray (Jennifer Garner) has lost her fiance only days before she was supposed to marry him. Unable to pay rent on the house they shared, she moves in with his two friends (the funny sidekicks) and, for a time, the dead fiance’s best friend, Fritz. Things get complicated when Gray discovers her beloved 1) was rich and 2) had a lovechild with a floozy from L.A. Oh, and Gray can’t help but fall in love with Fritz who, even though he’s kind of a sleaze, has a good heart and makes her feel like herself when she’s around him. If this sounds like nonsense, that’s because it is. Show up for Kevin Smith as Sam, proving Silent Bob is actually more interesting when he speaks.
