Gay Rights

GIMME ONE GOOD REASON
A quest to discover why I should oppose gay marriage

In October, Florida4Marriage.org announced that it was just a few thousand signatures away from securing a spot on the November 2008 ballot to ask voters to enshrine a ban on gay marriage in the state constitution. This is a perplexing issue for me: I don’t get exactly what about the prospect of gay marriage gets social conservatives so atwitter.

Would letting gays marry somehow screw up their marriages? That doesn’t make much sense. Does the advent of gay marriage lead to a rise in out-of-wedlock birth and divorce rates? That idea was convincingly shot down (at least in Scandinavia, where same-sex relationships were first sanctioned) by University of Massachusetts at Amherst professor M.V. Lee Badgett in a 2004 article in the journal Sexuality Research & Social Policy.

So are we then merely to chalk up the anti-gay marriage movement to religion-fueled intolerance? Or is there a legitimate reason why society shouldn’t allow same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexuals?

In November, I heard a man-on-the-street interview that a reporter at 580 WDBO-AM conducted on this very question. The interviewee’s response: “If the law allows people to go out there and have same-sex marriage, how are you going to produce the world with other humans?”

Um, what?

The articles to which the Florida4Marriage.org site links weren’t much help. One, titled “Ten Persuasive Answers to the Question ‘Why Not Gay Marriage?’” by Focus on the Family “same-sex marriage expert” Glenn T. Stanton, was anything but persuasive. Stanton suggests that hetero marriage is the anchor upon which societies are built, and allowing gays to marry would destroy civilization as we know it.

Still unconvinced, I set out to ask a few Central Floridians what exactly being “against gay marriage” means. Could I find even one good reason why I, too, should sign that Florida4Marriage.org petition and so aggressively “defend marriage”?

God says so

I began the afternoon of Nov. 23 – Black Friday in the retail world – at the Altamonte Springs Wal-Mart, with a 30-something Salvation Army bell-ringer. When asked, she promptly informed me that she was against gay marriage. Why? “Because it’s not of God and I just don’t like it.”

You can’t really argue with the “of God” part. Everyone has ideas on what policies the Big Guy favors, and I’m not here for a theological argument. Besides, public policy isn’t supposed to be based on any individual’s interpretation of the Bible, right?

(I’m reminded of Exodus 35:2: “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord: Whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.” Does that mean I should head back to Wal-Mart Sunday and smite all the store’s employees?)

I posed the same question to two women in their early 60s. “Because God created man and woman,” one replied while the other continued her shopping. Humans are indeed divided into two sexes; upon that we can all agree. Still, should the reality of gender be the basis for a public policy that denies a segment of the public rights afforded to others?

In the arts and crafts department, a retired seamstress echoed that sentiment. “For man and woman only,” she told me. In the automotive department, a tall, thin mechanic in his 40s informed me, “I’m against gay everything.”

OK, but why? “’Cause it’s not right,” he said. “It’s immoral.”

Four people, all with different spins on that old cliché: God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. I needed to scratch a little deeper beneath the surface.

Tolerant?

A few days later, on Dec. 5th, I ventured out to the Target on East Colonial Drive to see if I could find more substantive answers. My first subject, a 58-year-old in a flannel shirt and glasses, said he opposed gay marriage for religious reasons: “The Bible’s pretty clear about it. It specifically says marriage between a man and a woman. I’m not gonna debate it with you, but that’s what I believe.”

But what if I don’t believe the same things that you do?

“Well, constitutionally speaking,” he said, “some gay union is legal. I wouldn’t call it marriage. The institution of marriage I consider between men and women.”

“But gay unions?”

“Unions of any kind legally are fine with me.”

“So as long as it’s not ‘marriage’?”

“Yeah, I’m fairly tolerant.”

It’s worth noting that the proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage would also forbid “the substantial equivalent thereof,” meaning any sort of civil union that gives homosexual couples the same rights as straight couples.

Later that day, I headed back to the Altamonte Springs Wal-Mart. I stopped an elementary-school teacher in her mid-40s. She was happy to tell me all about her “radical” views on gay marriage.

“[I]t’s not natural,” she said. “Because when God created the world he didn’t create man and man or woman and woman, he created a man and a woman. He created one of each.”

Some states already allow civil unions, I respond. What would you say if that were allowed in Florida? “OK, the world was created by God,” she replied. “The world wasn’t created by any president or any governor. Nothing. So if nobody wants to follow God’s rules, what for is the world then?”

“What’s the world for?”

“Yeah. If you want to form a family and you get two women married, how are you going to create a family? Religion or no religion, I am against gay marriage.”

Is marriage only for procreation? What then are we to make of straight, childless couples? Should those be banned too?

She’s also against any homosexual public displays of affection.

“You know, everybody has the right to choose whatever they want. So as long as they don’t obligate other people, especially children, to see them or make them public – hugging each other or kissing each other – that makes a scandal.”

So it’s OK if it’s private?

“Probably.”

Out of sight, out of mind, I suppose.

Again, we’re back to the same argument about gay marriage: Some people, mainly for religious reasons, simply aren’t comfortable with gays marrying, and they believe that discomfort should be codified into law. There may be some sense that gay marriage would have negative consequences for society at large, but in my interviews at least, that idea never seemed to develop beyond a superficial, gut-level feeling.

If there is a good reason why I should hop on the Florida4Marriage.org bandwagon, I’ve yet to hear it.

I know that homophobes come in all shapes and sizes (and professions), but how upsetting that an elementary teacher, given her position to influence many young people, should be so ignorant.  All that nonsense about god and religion (who, pray tell, do you think created Steve?!?) is just a convenient way to promote bigotry without feeling guilty about it.  God help the poor children left under that woman's supervision, and let's hope that reason and decency play a greater role in shaping their minds than some backward, hateful second-grade teacher, who's as capable of interpreting the Bible as she is a Dick and Jane book.  There's a reason the rest of the developed world is so much more progressive on this issue than the folks in Florida...it's called brains.  And apparently too many people in Florida lack them.

Steve:  I decided to comment on this article as obviously you don't state all the facts.  Now first off, I'm a Christian; but will state reasons why I don't agree with you that aren't based upon my faith and of course will state reasons based upon my faith also.  Lets, get to the point now shall we?  First off Christianity is not a religion, it is a way of life.  Many religions out there will force you to accept their beliefs and some at knife point; but Christianity is not like that, no one forces anyone to do anything.  The reason Christians are spreading the Word is because of the fact that we love our fellowman and don't want them to perish, so, therefore we inform them of the free gift that our creator has made available to them, the gift that if they accept they won't perish but live eternally with Him.  We aren't forcing others to accept anything, quite different than homosexuals who feel they have to shove their lifestyles down everyone else's throats. Now, that said, let's face some of the things you stated, as you did use a verse from the Old Testament in the book of Exodus, now Steve that verse you used is a verse that was for the nation of Israel, not Christians; but of course, I see you applied it to Christians, so just wanted you to be aware of that.  Why do I not think that homosexuals should be allowed to be married?  Simple, marriage is a union between a man and a woman, it is a sacred union, a union between anything else but a woman and a man is perverse.  Marriage is supposed to based on love not lust, and homosexuality is not love it is lust.  Secondly, I believe that when a person causes mischief they should correct it at thier expense and with their time don't you?  I mean, obviously that is not the mindset of the homosexual.  To prove that I will give some historical facts about homosexuals and let everyone be aware of them.  First off, the majority of the people in this country aren't homosexuals, the homosexuals just yell and whine louder than the rest of us is all.  I remember when homosexuality was called what it is, it was called "sodomy" and it was against the law; but, later, the psychiatrists told us that the sodomite was mentally ill and we should feel sorry for them, so we did, then we all were told that we should let them "be who they were and have their own lifestyle" and "accept them for who they were", that was done.  Now what?  We are being forced now to affirm them, yes that's right, they not just want to be accepted now, they want to shove their lifestyle down everybody else's throats, they want to flaunt that lifestyle in front of everyone and have everyone clap their hands for them for their choice and pat them on the back right?  That said lets get down to what the homosexuals in this country have done to this country shall we?  They have shoved their financial responsibilities off on others, as who pays for Aids research?  The government correct?  Who is the government?  The people correct?  Does everyone have anything to do with this disease?  No.  It is a disease that God has cursed the sodomite with.  It is His punishment to them for their lifestyle; but who is paying for that?  The homosexuals?  Of course not, the rest of us are. The rest of us have to help pay for their medicines that they need to control the disease and the other things needed to control it, research for ways to fight it and prevent it.  Doesn't sound fair to me, does it to you?  Of course, homosexuals feel they should be loved by everyone and everyone should bare the blunt of their disease right?  What about all the rapes of children and the pornography of children, who does statistics show is responsible for this?  Homosexuals of course.  Just another way they have of trying to recruit others into thier lifestyle and the outcome of what happens when you give into perverse desires of lust .  You know something?  It is one thing to do something yourself, it is quite another to enlist others in it with you and that is just what is going on here.  Homosexuals don't care about anyone but themselves, that is very obvious.  As they neck in public continuously, doesn't matter if children are around, matter of fact, they do it more when children are around.  Last time I noticed, they were even trying to infiltrate into a very well know Christian group, the Boy Scouts of America, and no, I don't feel they should be allowed to shove their pathetic, sick lifestyle down the throats of innocent boys being brought up with good morals and I don't think many people will disagree with that, just homosexuals, they want to infiltrate anything that is good in this country for the purpose of destroying it and that is not right either. For starters, here are a few things to think about here.  If the homosexuals want to promote their lifestyle, want to get married, why not allow them to occupy a few states in the US, that way they can spread their diseases amongst themselves, and lead each other down the wrong path and also; when God decides to show wrath, He will know exactly where to apply it, sparing the rest of us you think?  Not only that, let them financially pay for the damages thier lifestyle has caused and also it can be contained within a few states right?  How does that sound for a plan?  And no there are not more homosexuals in this country than non-homosexuals, the homosexuals just yell louder and whine louder is all.  Believe me, this country was founded on Christian principles and we are starting to fall from them and had better get back on line with what God blessed this country for.  I believe the only reason we haven't been destroyed is because when we reached out and grasped onto satan with our left hand we reached out and grasped onto nation Israel with our right hand.  As the Bible states that "those that bless Israel will be blessed and those that curse Israel will be cursed"  God says what He means and means what He says.  That right hand seems to be slipping lately and I believe when it does we will all face the wrath of an Almighty God if we don't make some serious changes, and this condonings of Sodmite behavior is one of them. I'm all for them being in a few select states, then maybe the rest of us won't have to see the Wrath of God for it can be meted out to the ones who deserve it instead.
