Sketchbook Productions premieres this documentary about the '80s hardcore punk scene through the eyes teens from Trenton, N.J; www.averagecommunity.com
Local filmmaker Fred Zara and his brother, Christopher, helmed a documentary that chronicles Fred’s decision to go back to his hometown of Trenton, N.J., and the emotional consequences of the trip; the first public screening of the cathartic film is tonight. The Zara brothers, like so many other disenchanted youths, formed a punk band in the ’80s, P.O.W., which gained some level of local notoriety in Trenton. Zara organizes a reunion of its members and their immediate circle, but it’s not as easy as it sounds; a few live in different states, while some are hesitant to revisit the past. One crucial friend, a beautiful girl whose enthusiasm provided the heart of the band, died while the band was still together. Another member may be homeless, and for one of the crew, this get-together will be his last. Thanks to Fred’s introspective yet lively narration, Average Community turns out to be an fascinating snapshot with a ton of heart, albeit the tough New Jersey kind.
