Gourmet magazine, Conde Nast's 70-year-old magazine that covered food, cooking and travel, was shuttered Monday morning, one of four titles recommended for the chop by consultants hired by the publisher to reduce costs.
Skillions of food journalists and bloggers have commented at this point, and Salivation Army really has nothing to add, except to opine that it was a poor decision. No doubt it was an expensive property, but it was an extremely prestigious and respected one — cutting out quality doesn't help you make money.
The archives are a treasure trove of food and travel writing that date back to World War II. Here's a wonderful article, "An Evening at the Waldorf," apparently one that has generated more letters to the magazine than any other story they've published. The magazine will be missed, and we look forward to seeing where revered editor Ruth Reichl and her talented team of writers and photographers do next.
