Food TV wars! Impolitic silver fox Anthony Bourdain has made no bones about his distaste for raspy-voiced spokesmoppet Rachael Ray in the past; he's called her a bobblehead and a freakazoid, among other things. (His best line: When Ray got her Dunkin Donuts endorsement deal, he said it was tantamount to "endorsing crack for kids.") But when she booked the New York Dolls, his favorite band, for her SXSW party, he really lost his shit. From his Travel Channel blog:
"Rachael Ray, it appears, when booking acts for her South by Southwest
indie rock-meets-sloppy Joes fest, invited the New York Dolls to
perform. THE NEW YORK DOLLS!! It is an article of faith with me that the Dolls
were one of the greatest, most important, criminally neglected, wildly
influential bands in the history of well, the freakin' UNIVERSE!! ... This development ... has caused me no small amount of
confusion, panic, and misery. I don't know whether to go out and shoot a puppy — or send Rachael a fruit basket."
His misery was compounded by Ray's response: She beat him to the punch with
the fruit basket, and included a friendly note for good measure. (This woman may not be a chef, but she didn't get where she is by being stupid.)
Forced to back down, he posted a nice thank you note on his blog, and puppies are safe for the time being. Good thing she didn't send a dozen Dunkin Donuts, I guess.
