Opera may be gone, but the costumes from its former productions of “Amahl and
the Night Visitors” were rescued and will resurface in this weekend’s double
performance of the opera originally commissioned by NBC and that debuted Dec.
24, 1951 – performed at Rockefeller Center and broadcast live as the first
Hallmark Hall of Fame television special.
Written
by Gian-Carlo Menotti (who died in 2007), the opera was inspired by is viewing
of the painting “The Adoration of the Magi” by Hieronymus Bosch from the late
1400s (pictured above).
Lyndol Michael (formerly of Women Playwright's Initiative) is directing “Amahl and the
Night Visitors” using the musical talent within the College Park Baptist Church
(her church) community. Speaking with her briefly on the phone – her voice
hoarse from laryngitis – she says the opera is moving and powerful.
And it's yet another example of the richness of free cultural events in the Orlando area
