God I'm old.
I remember seeing The Blair Witch Project at the Enzian for the first time. Sitting in that dark theater, I'd heard the buzz about this little Orlando film and how its Internet presence that touted verisimilitude as a kind of cinematic performance art – as if they'd never heard of Cannibal Holocaust which, by the way, plays the Enzian just before midnight on Oct. 17 – and how people thought the film was actually real. Of course, my "experience" with the web-enabled phenomenon was limited to the library's 56K connection at that time.
But it worked on me. I was terrified, shaken.
It's been ten years since then. Ten bizarre years that brought about an awful sequel, a couple of decent flicks from the behind-the-scenes Blair guys (Alien Raiders, The Objective, Seventh Moon) and one pretty respectable career for the lead actor, Joshua Leonard (Humpday). And, of course, a million parodies.
Now it's time to revisit those heady days of Orlando pride with a 10th anniversary, one-night-only screening of Blair Witch back where it all started: The Enzian Theater.
The film plays this Saturday night at 11:59 p.m. Tix are $8 (less for Enzian members) and they can be purchased here. Blair Witch producer Robin Cowie will also be in attendance at the screening for an audience Q&A.
