Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of the hit musical "Hamilton," apparently does not want state Sen. Darren Soto to throw away his shot at getting elected to Congress and has donated $1,500 to the candidate's campaign.

Soto is running in a tough Democratic primary to represent congressional District 9, which encompasses parts of Orange, Osceola and Polk Counties. Miranda, who lists his occupation as a "rapper" in the campaign finance reports, has donated to Soto along with other members of his family, who gave $5,000 to the campaign. If it's a little strange that a famous New Yorker is paying attention to a congressional Democratic primary in Florida, consider that Miranda, like Soto, is of Puerto Rican heritage. Many of Soto's supporters are hoping for change in District 9 and on the island if Soto becomes the first boricua from Florida to make it to Congress.

"Many thanks to the Miranda family for all the support," Soto says on Facebook. "Let's win this!"

The battle in District 9 has been messy, though. Most of the drama in this crowded primary comes from the current seat-holder, U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson. Soto is running against Grayson's district director, Susannah Randolph, and Grayson's new wife and medical researcher, Dena Grayson.
