In case it snuck up on you, Memorial Day is Monday (three-day weekend, woot!), which officially signifies the start of grilling season.

Publix might be your go-to for #allthemeats to throw on the barbie, but this year, we suggest forgoing convenience in favor of supporting some local butchers vending high-quality meats you might not find elsewhere.

The Meat House
669 Orange Ave., Winter Park
407-629-6320

Find steaks and sausages, sure, but also lamb and exotic meats like ostrich, wild boar, venison and elk (just call ahead to confirm selection before you choose a protein-specific recipe).

Petty's Meat Market
2141 W. State Road 434, Longwood
407-862-0400

We're particularly fond of the buffalo-chicken sausage and the rounds of coiled Italian sausages, but there are also plenty of pre-marinated meats, sides and cheeses to fill the self-serve station at your pool party. Also, lots of wine.

Paramount Butcher Shop
448 S. Alafaya Trail
407-730-3198

Over in East Orlando, this halal butcher is well-stocked with both classic and custom cuts, from New York strip steaks to shawarma. If you've never tried goat, Paramount's shoulder and chops are ideal for charcoal and fire. Just marinate with a puree of garlic, onion, olive oil, lemon zest and juice, white wine, oregano, salt and pepper for at least an hour before grilling.
