After a long and torturous wait for the place to finally open its doors, Black Rooster Taqueria is now open in Mills 50
, conveniently next to the Guesthouse bar and across the street from Pig Floyds – could it be that Orlando is becoming a walkable city after all, with all these dining/drinking/socializing hotspots right in one square block?
Among the beans and tacos and plantains, all of which are very good, don't get me wrong, there's this unassuming dessert at the bottom of the menu that just completely steals the show.
I'll qualify this by saying that I just got back from Mexico City and was completely enamorada
with the quality of food and the flavors I experienced there. Pretty much everything I've eaten since returning home on Tuesday has been disappointing ... but not this.
When the server dropped off this flan to our table, I'll be honest, the deep red chipotle sauce on the top gave me pause. But, like my mama always said, the best thing to do is just dive in and face the facts. The salty-spicy-smoky-sweet chipotle on top, combined with the crunchy peanuts and chocolate cookie crumbles dashed on top of the densely creamy chocolate flan sitting in a pool of bittersweet caramel – it's all the textures you want, all in one spoonful.
Try it for yourself (don't split it because after the first bite, you won't want to share) at just a little over $3 for a decently sized single serving. I'll be back this weekend for another taste.

OK, so it's not the most photogenic of desserts, but good Lord, it is delicious.
