Over the past six years, the Orlando metropolitan area has seen a drastic increase in gun retailers, according to a recent study performed by BuildZoom.

Since 2010, Orlando, Sanford and Kissimmee have experienced a 74 percent increase in gun shops, compared to a 47 percent overall increase in the state of Florida.

Florida isn't alone when it comes to large spikes in new gun shops. At least 43 states show an increase in gun sellers per capita, and data shows a greater increase in the southeast states, where both North Carolina and South Carolina saw 37 percent increases.

While there are many factors to this, an overall jump in gun sales is hard to ignore. Earlier this month, Obama announced executive actions to extend background check requirements and clarify licensing requirements for gun sellers. The Bradenton Herald reported that gun dealers and state officials say the President's latest move may spur more sales and drive up the number of concealed carry permits in the state.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, 137,941 applications were filed for firearm background checks in December, which is the highest monthly total since 2004.

While the U.S. population has increased by 3.9 percent from 2010 to 2015, the number of gun stores has increased by 18.3 percent, which means the number of gun sellers grew 4.7 times faster than the population.

According to BuildZoom, there are more than five times as many gun sellers as Starbucks locations and four times as many gun sellers as McDonalds restaurants. With the number of U.S. gun sellers making up the same number of elementary schools and half the number of gas stations, data shows 23 million guns were sold in the United States in 2015 — or one gun for every 13 Americans.
