Ella Fishbourh, 14, decided to give a male friend at Jackson Heights Middle School a hug only to end up in detention.

The Seminole County Public Schools code of conduct prohibits "inappropriate touching, or any other physical act that is considered to be offensive, socially unacceptable, or not suitable for an educational setting." However, it's up to the school principal to decide just what is inappropriate.

According to Click Orlando, school administrators said detentions are given out after a second offense. Last month, Ella was warned about public displays of affection because the same boy she hugged put his hand on her head.

"I do think about inappropriate touching and boys and girls of this age having feelings for one another, but that's not what we're dealing with here. And if administration can't tell the difference between a friendly, 'How are you doing' hug and an inappropriate hug, then I think we have another big problem," Kathy Fishbourgh, Ella's mother, said to Click Orlando.

Now, Ella has a mark on her formerly squeaky clean permanent record, and she told Click Orlando that she's afraid to touch anyone at her school.
