Avid Disney collectors and fans of cute kitchen stuff alike will be thrilled to hear that the Mouse has released a few new Orange Bird items, just in time for holiday shopping.

A figurine, a mug, a plate, a pair of tea towels and a set of salt and pepper shakers join last year's bowl, orange juice pitcher and small juice glasses, all of which are available at various in-park shops and on the online Disney store.

There will also be an Orange Bird Magic Band, and of course there's always the entry-level sippy cup (see below), sold at the Sunshine Tree Terrace.

Some Orange Bird backstory: The adorably primitive Orange Bird was originally conceived by the Florida Citrus Growers association in the 1970s as part of their sponsorship of the newly opened Walt Disney World. In its original incarnation, a "life-sized" (read: human-sized) Orange Bird character bobbled its awkward way through a musical revue and walked about greeting visitors.

Unfortunately, the Bird had a long association with the citrus growers' other shill, the hateful Anita Bryant — the woman who, when not pitching Florida OJ to the nation, said things like "As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children" and "If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail biters."

Nice. But she got paid back for her attitude.

Due more, we suspect, to Disney's practice of selectively disappearing and reappearing fan favorites (masters of manipulation that they are) than to any tarnishing of its wings by association with Bryant, the big-head bird went into hibernation (do birds hibernate? I guess we have bears on the brain) in 1981. But he was revived in 2012 as the aforementioned Sunshine Tree Terrace sippy cup, which quickly became the most-tweeted WDW trophy of 2012. Think orange thoughts!
