Orlando will now be home to two soccer teams after the Orlando City Soccer Club announced it’s launching Orlando Pride, making it the tenth National Women’s Soccer League team.
The Club says the team will start playing next year in the Citrus Bowl under former head coach of the Australian and U.S. women’s national teams, Tom Sermanni, according to a press release
Local officials and OCSC president Phil Rawlins announced the news at a Tuesday press conference in front of Lake Eola, whose fountain in featured in the team’s new logo. Although people were generally excited about the new team, some complained about the logo and compared it to a lactating breast
, which is now all we can see. On Orlando City’s Facebook page
, Rawlins addressed the issue, saying Orlando Pride was “not allowed to use the lion or any derivative of the lion.”
“The lion OC logo belongs to MLS and is used by Adidas, the Women's apparel will all be Nike!” Rawlins wrote. “We are simply not allowed to use its like or derivative on the Women's logo. Therefore we had to come up with a distinctly different and separate logo for the NWSL team. At the same time we wanted to tie in the name to the Lion family. This would all have been too lengthy and inappropriate to outline in a press conference.”
Regardless, we're excited! The general public can start buying season tickets at 1 p.m. on Oct. 25 at Orlando-Pride.com
