One of the infinite choices that face a painter is how to confront the material to which she’s applying the paint. Should she obliterate the surface, or should she embrace the inherent texture and hue? Christie Miga has leaned toward the former camp in her past work, applying so many layers of freely dripping paint and finely cut stencils that her surfaces disappeared, transcended by a riot of color and pattern. In her latest show, she advances her techniques in a new direction, working with the grain on wood panels and incorporating their beauty into the beauty she creates with her brushes, washes and stencils. This show is a rare treat: a chance to see evolution in action.
