Friday, Nov. 7 is the second annual World Vasectomy Day. Previously headquartered in Australia, the headquarters for this year's event is located at Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando’s new Kissimmee Health Center. Last year, as part of the event, 100 physicians in 25 countries performed 1000 vasectomies in 24 hours. The goal this year is a bit loftier, as the event organizers hope to band together 250 doctors in 30 countries to perform 1500 vasectomies in 24 hours.

Co-founder of the event, urologist Doug Stein, M.D, is offering 25 men the opportunity to have their vasectomies performed free of charge. To be eligible, you must sign up in advance on his website. Men be warned, though, if you get one of Dr. Stein's free snippings, your vasectomy will be live-streamed in real time on the World Vasectomy Day website. In addition to the Orlando vasectomies, the live stream will include interviews with family planning leaders, live streams from other vasectomies happening in the United States and those happening around the world in what the organizer are calling a "vasectomy-athon."

World Vasectomy Day was founded last year as a means to heighten awareness about and increase access the procedure. According to the Guttmacher Institute, "The average woman spends about five years pregnant, postpartum or trying to become pregnant, and three decades—more than three-quarters of her reproductive life—trying to avoid an unintended pregnancy." With their event, Dr. Stein and his co-founder Jonathan Stack hope to engage men "as equal partners with women in the global family planning conversation."
