Local artist Boy Kong (right, with/in his own work) has been blowing minds and blowing up Instagram feeds since his earliest shows in Orlando. I first saw his work in a hilarious, candy-colored horror show called Anti-Happy Story Time! while scarfing a late dinner at Tako Cheena, but his show at the Peacock Room in May 2013, Play Nice Die Young, was the one that really started people talking (and earned him a Best of Orlando editor's pick). That was only boosted by his massive, meditative piece — a wall of 100 lucky cats — at the CityArts B-Side Artists Retrospective a month later.

Now the artist has teamed up with Nhi Dinh Linh Nguyen, a Miss Vietnam Florida contestant, in an online auction of an original Boy Kong painting to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Progress pictures are posted on the Facebook page every day; bids will be accepted via private message until 11:59pm Wednesday, Jan. 29, with the winner announced Jan. 30. (Prints will also be available after the winner is announced, so if you don't win the painting, you can still buy a print for a smaller donation.) As the painter himself puts it, "You get a nice piece of art and the kids get a wish, it's a win at the end of the day! So why not?"

I know January is a month to be fiscally conservative, but I must say that the ahermmuttermutter dollars I spent last year on local art (Boy Kong's and others) are the dollars I least regret spending. Bonus: freaking out my poor little kitty with a GIANT BOY KONG KITTY:
