Today, after the State of Downtown address at the Amway, Mayor Buddy Dyer was scheduled to announce that Orlando is getting another car-share program. Hertz 24/7 will bring 12 vehicles to downtown Orlando that will be available for rent at a rate beginning $8 per hour. That "beginning at" caveat is important to keep in mind, as the company rents cars from different locations at different prices – when we looked online for cars available in Orlando today, the cheapest one we could find was a Ford Fiesta that rents for $10.76 per hour from 82 N. Garland Ave. That same vehicle is $13.30 per hour if you rent it from the 306 Broadway pickup area. Larger vehicles, like the Dodge Avenger, will cost you more than $19 an hour to rent. So do your homework before you show up looking for an $8 car.

Orlando also has a Zipcar program, but it's primarily geared toward students. Zipcar operates three pickup points on the University of Central Florida campus. Its rates are far more consistent. A Honda Insight costs $8.50 an hour to rent, while a Ford Focus hatchback is listed at $7.50 per hour – no matter which location you pick it up from.

  •  Lot 10 at Hughey Avenue and Central Boulevard (2 vehicles)
  •  CNL parking garage on Boone Avenue behind City Hall (2 vehicles)
  • Creative Village on Alexander Place at the end of the LYMMO line (2 vehicles)
  • Thornton Park neighborhood at Central Boulevard and Eola Drive (2 vehicles)
  • Landmark Center on Broadway Avenue at Robinson Street (2 vehicles)
  • Florida Hospital Orlando Campus at Sanitarium Avenue and Rollins Street (2 vehicles)
