Friday-Saturday, May 10-11 – 35th Anniversary Wyland Gallery Show
6-10 p.m. Friday at Disney's Polynesian Resort, 1600 Seven Seas Drive, Lake Buena Vista
6-10 p.m. Saturday at Disney's Boardwalk, 2101 N. Epcot Blvd., Lake Buena Vista
You don’t need to live in a beachside town to see Wyland’s artwork: His giant ocean life murals scale the sides of buildings all around the globe – from California to Beijing to Washington, D.C. Maybe it’s merely the enormity, but the marine artist’s work has been known to prompt a stop-and-stare kind of viewing (even if, in this writer’s case, it was on an exterior wall of a rundown Kmart in the Florida Keys). During his career, Wyland’s subjects (sea creatures such as whales and dolphins and manatees) evolved into the impetus behind the Wyland Foundation, an organization dedicated to water conservation and saving sea life through public art programs and educational activities. Fans of his art and environmental efforts have the chance to meet Wyland in person this week, as the artist stops by his two galleries on Disney property in honor of 35 years of artistic endeavors. Expect an unveiling of new works, a showing of the documentary film Blues Planet: Sounds (narrated by oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle) and a convo with Wyland on his travels and upcoming eco-friendly ventures. – Aimee Vitek
