From his album’s selection as one of Rolling Stone’s top 100 greatest debuts of all time (No. 86, to be exact) to taking the high road when that same album was publicly bashed on Twitter, California rapper Kendrick Lamar continues to surprise us. He hasn’t been in the game long, either, joining a major record label (Interscope) just last year, yet he already collaborates with major names like Dr. Dre, Drake and 50 Cent, and his 2012 release Good Kid, m.A.A.d City turned gold within the year. Lamar transcends other rappers lyrically, as he pieces his songs together through relatable narratives like “Poetic Justice.” That’s probably why this acclaimed MC has climbed the ladder of success so quickly, already wearing the “New King of the West Coast” crown, as unanimously agreed upon by veterans Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Game. – Shelby England
