Though the more whimsical literary moralists among us may be more inclined to reenact 6-year-old Scout’s crazy-house fascinations with Boo Radley up the road – or even on our own roads in present day – lawyer types, naturally, would beg to differ. Instead, some serious local legal eagles will be hashing out (via re-creation) whether the central whipping boy of Harper Lee’s 1960 masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird – a black man named Tom Robinson – was failed by his fictional (and racist) jury when he was convicted on interracial rape charges despite the iconic defense of one Atticus Finch. Given the racial iniquities that remain a half a century after the book was published, it should make for some timely fare. Local Circuit Judge Bob LeBlanc will handle the “judging” duties, while representatives from both the public defender’s office and the State Attorney’s Office will (re)make the Robinson case. We’ll simply be watching in awe from up in the “colored” gallery, because we still like Scout best. – Billy Manes
