Thursday, Nov. 3 – Odd Future
It was impossible not to recall California band Fear’s fateful 1981 SNL appearance (on the insistence of mega-fan John Belushi) that announced hardcore punk to a mainstream audience (and caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to the show’s set in the process) when, back in February, a bubbling-under-the-surface blog-rap act known as Odd Future invaded Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night set, triggering glee-induced chaos unlike anything seen in that TV hour in years. So who are Odd Future and what are they about? It’s hard to say at this point. Mixtapes from the (at least) eight-member crew abound, and breakout star Tyler the Creator’s proper solo debut, Goblin, indicates a horror bent to Odd Future’s minimal, yet fiery, delivery. However, even though they seem to be everywhere, this wolf gang remains indefinable, which is exactly where they want to be right now. – Justin Strout (8 p.m. at the Beacham, 46 N.
