Through Oct. 31 – A Petrified Forest
You know what makes haunted-woods walkthroughs meant to portray a Deliverance-style redneck nightmare genuinely terrifying? When they’re actually set in a Deliverance-style redneck nightmare. Taking place near the creepy intersection where Altamonte Springs, Winter Springs and Casselberry collide in a clusterfuck of strip clubs and car repair shops, the folks behind A Petrified Forest start building their playground of terror super early – practically by hand – in a lonesome sliver of abandoned woods dotted by rusted, broken-down school buses and a driverless tractor. Of course, we’re 97 percent sure it’s all on the up-and-up and that Ned Beatty’s not lurking behind door No. 3 in the walkthrough that makes Halloween Horror Nights look like the theme park it truly is, but that doesn’t make it any less of a bowel-evacuating experience when the chainsaw’s coming for you. – Justin Strout (7:30 p.m. Friday, through Oct. 31 at A Petrified Forest, 1360 State Road 436, Altamonte Springs; $5-$20; 407-468-6600; apetrifiedforest.com)
