For starters, the move to cut news pages was driven by our need to reduce expenses. A newsroom's biggest costs are the news gatherers — reporters, photographers, graphic journalists and editors — and newsprint. Last month, we chose to cut news pages to help bolster our bottom line. We're part of a larger company, Chicago-based Tribune Co., and properties such as the Orlando Sentinel make local decisions on what size paper and staff they can afford, based on their revenues. And we're not alone in making these decisions. Many news organizations face similar choices.
Romenesko points out, though that the Sentinel "is reducing news pages two months after the Chicago Tribune announced that it’s adding 40 more news pages a week and said its news hole is larger than it was five years ago."
Somehow, I can't even find it in me to come up with a pithy kicker for this one. There's just nothing funny about more cuts to print media. Or maybe I've just lost my sense of humor.
