It was 30 years ago today... Duran Duran taught the world to play

You want to feel old? Well, here goes. On this date, 30 years ago, five lads with Birmingham dirt under their late-night fingernails embarked upon the journey of a lifetime with little more than a pill bottle full of ambition and an affinity for sci-fi Jane Fonda dysfunction. Yes, dears, this is the official 30th anniversary of the release of "Planet Earth," Duran Duran's first single, the one with the video evidence that you could dance atop an ice cube in a pirate blouse. For those of us locked in the facial wrinkles of pop culture with a twist of Le Bon for youth preservation, this is a milestone. The band have been in receipt of significant acclaim for their latest release, All You Need Is Now, which was reviewed for the FIRST time anywhere in the world by this very publication. (It will get a physical release on S-Curve at the end of March). They've also just announced their place atop the bill of Miami's Ultra Music Festival on March 25. Now! Indeed!

For now, though, it's time for a bit of reminiscence. Our friends at the amazing Duran website Gimme a Wristband (viewers of the iconic tour doc Sing Blue Silver from '84 will sweat at the reference) have unearthed some kind of brilliantly superfluous retrospective on the ins and outs of "Planet Earth," Duran and EMI Records, presenting it in a three-part series (only parts one and two are available right now... the rest is on its way) for your pop-rocked reflection. Wristband-wearer Kitty Amsbry and author Steve Jansen are the king and queen of this kind of curation in the name of the fab-five/four, and this one does not disappoint. Just ask revered website Popmatters, which has lovingly reproduced an abridged version of the story in honor of the anniversary of the Planet we call Earth. Some new romantic looking for the TV sound? Give it a read. And give me a fucking wristband!

Bop bop bop bop, bop bop bop bop bop...
